DSC_0183Our U.S.A. cycling trip started in Boston on July 31. After riding 4232 miles in 86 days through 15 states and part of Canada we arrived in San Francisco on October 26. We weathered the heat, rain, humidity, cold, wind, snow and sleet. We mostly camped, but also stayed in a few hotels and were hosted by warmshowers.org cyclists at times. The best thing after a long day in the saddle was a warm shower and a cold beer! Many, many people helped us along the way; we were often housed and fed like royalty by the hands of strangers. Passing through the country at 10 miles an hour is an amazing way to see what this country has to offer. We thank God for this beautiful country, the ability to cycle, the Americans and Canadians we met, and friends and family to come home to.

Our trip came to fruition in Jeju, South Korea. Three weeks into our year of teaching English in Seoul, South Korea we were “forced” to go on vacation. Jeju is considered the Hawaii of South Korea. We were walking back from the Manjanggul Cave talking about how we like to do pretty extreme activities. I through-out the idea of biking around the world. We were so excited for our new adventure. We talked a
bout getting sponsors and our route. Then we got to thinking about how long it would take, and started asking ourselves “can we live on a bike for a year”? The answer at the time was no. So…We decided to shorten the trip a little and conquer the U.S.A. Below is an overview of our trip.

We read many blogs in preparation for this trip which was a lot of fun. Looking back, doing the research and the anticipation of a long adventure on the road with so many thing unknown, was almost as fun as doing the trip. We read that cycling West to East was the “easy” way to ride across the country; the whole trade wind thing.  We tough to ourselves, “how bad could it be”. Well, in Wyoming we were cursing the wind. For us though, cycling West Coast to East Coast was a big deal it meant we were always peddling home. On good days and especially on bad days it was always in your mind that each mile peddled was a DSC_0486 - Copymile closer to home.

We split our trip up into two legs the parent leg, and the not parent leg. Our parents wanted to ride the first 500 miles of the trip with us, which was a lot of fun. They rode from Boston to New York City (NYC). With such a large group and the fact that our parents needed to catch a flight, we ended up planning planned each night. Trying to find a place to sleep every night was the last thing we wanted to worry about. After New York City it was just the two of us.

See how we weathered over 3 months.
